At the Calvary Apostolic Church, during the Awakenings 2011 conference, Evangelist David Smith mentioned to the congregation that he had been challenged by Bishop Ewing just a few days before the Bishop had passed. Bishop Ewing demanded David Smith tell him what he believed. At that moment Brother Smith recited to Bishop Ewing what he believed and why he believed it. What was his belief?
In death, Bishop Ewing believed having a firm scriptural foundation and a solid belief was what was most important. This account of this story from David Smith pricked my heart. I thought about my children and if they would be able to do the same thing. Would they answer if I was a few days from passing? Had I trained them enough to be able to recite their beliefs. The Bible tells us to train up a child in the ways they should go. What I decided to do was challenge my children now.
I sat them down and told them what I wanted from them was a list of “What they Believed”. I wanted them to list “I believe…” and a scripture that supported their belief. I was going to give them one week to complete the assignment. What I received literally brought tears to my eyes.
Here are a few examples of what my children believe:
Elijah: I believe you have to maintain a prayer life of your own. Colossians 4:2, “Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving.”
Brooke: I believe God has a plan for everyone. Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.”
Elijah: I believe that you need to go to church. 1 John 1:3 ”That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us:”
Brooke: I believe God created the Earth and everything in it. Genesis 1:1 “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.”
Elijah: I believe there is a Heaven and a hell. Daniel 12:2 “And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.”
Brooke: I believe our bodies are a temple of God. 1 Corinthians6:19 “What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?”
Elijah & Brooke: I believe you must repent, be baptised in Jesus name and receive the Holy Ghost to go to Heaven. Acts2:38, “Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.”
From this I decided this family will declare an articles of faith. We will publish the list and display it in our home for all to know. The following scripture summaries where we stand.
Joshua 24:15 “And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”
My challenge to you is that you do the same in your family. Choose you this day,
