But your GenX parent? They remember when connecting to the internet meant sacrificing your phone line\u2014and your patience. Their idea of streaming was waiting 13 minutes for a song to download on Napster while praying no one picked up the landline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1189\" data-end=\"1414\">Napster wasn\u2019t just a music service to them\u2014it was a revolution. It&#8217;s a digital rebellion. A glitchy, slow-loading <em data-start=\"1300\" data-end=\"1310\">movement<\/em> that may or may not have crashed the family computer. They still talk about it. No\u2014<strong data-start=\"3661\" data-end=\"3679\">they had skins<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3682\" data-end=\"4036\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"3682\" data-end=\"3773\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3684\" data-end=\"3773\">Custom Winamp skins made your media player look like anything from a spaceship to lava.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"3774\" data-end=\"3864\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3776\" data-end=\"3864\">GenX would spend hours organizing folders, renaming files, and perfecting song order.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"3865\" data-end=\"3960\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3867\" data-end=\"3960\">Before iPods, there were clunky MP3 players with enough space for 14 songs and <em data-start=\"3946\" data-end=\"3957\">no screen<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"3961\" data-end=\"4036\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3963\" data-end=\"4036\">Yet they still wore them proudly on their belt clip like digital cowboys.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"1474\" data-end=\"1477\" \/>\n<h5 data-start=\"4043\" data-end=\"4091\"><strong data-start=\"4046\" data-end=\"4091\">Why They Don\u2019t Trust the Cloud<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4093\" data-end=\"4136\">It\u2019s not paranoia\u2014it\u2019s just dial-up trauma.<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"4138\" data-end=\"4435\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul data-start=\"4138\" data-end=\"4435\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"4138\" data-end=\"4216\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4140\" data-end=\"4216\">Your GenX parent still keeps backup files on flash drives \u201cjust in case.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"4217\" data-end=\"4291\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4219\" data-end=\"4291\">They\u2019ve said, \u201cI want it downloaded, not in the cloud\u201d more than once.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"4292\" data-end=\"4351\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4294\" data-end=\"4351\">They printed their airline boarding passes <em data-start=\"4337\" data-end=\"4348\">this year<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul data-start=\"4138\" data-end=\"4435\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"4352\" data-end=\"4435\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4354\" data-end=\"4435\">They have folders on their desktop labeled \u201cStuff\u201d &gt; \u201cMore Stuff\u201d &gt; \u201cPics Maybe?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4437\" data-end=\"4501\">Trust issues? But they were there at the beginning\u2014at the messy, dial-up, Winamp-skinned beginning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5238\" data-end=\"5415\">They are the reason MP3s exist. They\u2019re the reason Spotify <em data-start=\"5297\" data-end=\"5302\">had<\/em> to be invented. And somewhere in the basement is a stack of AOL disks that they still, weirdly, won\u2019t throw out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5417\" data-end=\"5484\">Give them grace.
